If all else fails, order cake

Macondo is a newbie to the growing number of new openings in Islington. The location is superb being in pedestrian-only Camden Passage, off of the busy Upper Street. It's an odd type of business really: art, bar, cafe, coffee house, lunch place, breakfast joint, but it seems to work and it's always busy when I go there. Their cakes are amazing. Huge slices of everything from chocolate cheesecake to brownies to cookies to carrot cakes. The flavours change daily but they have all been good, or the one's I've tried.

Their lunches are Spanish although their menu also carries Mexican-type dishes like Huevos Rancheros for breakfast or quesadillas. I've had their Spanish Tortilla which was gigantic and really good. They have a window display full of daily lunch items.

It's a good place to stop in for a fun cocktail, glass of wine or hot drink after some shopping and people watch (if you can get a table outside). The service is the let down though: slow, always out of something and forgetful of the basics (I always seem to have to remind them to bring my tap water).
