One of the first light rail systems in Britain, with one of the world's safest and most advanced automatic train control systems, DLR has expanded faster than any UK railway.

The DLR opened in 1987 to serve the first brownfield developments in Docklands with 11 trains and 15 stations.

Since then, a number of extensions have seen the DLR extended to Bank, Beckton, Lewisham and London City Airport.

Docklands Light Railway (DLR) London Reviews

Just Like a Roller Coaster - A couple of years ago I'd never been on the DLR, I pretty much only went places that were accesible using the northern or central line - then I discovered Greenwich and then I discovered the DLR.

Two seperate friends described the DLR to me before I'd been on it as being 'just like a roller coaster' - I didn't quite understand but I went to check it out.

They weren't lying, it IS just like a roller coaster, just not as scary and they don't strap you in. It leaves from Bank or Tower Hill and then heads in a bunch of directions including Lewisham, Beckton, City Airport and Stratford.

The thing is that after a couple of stops the train goes overground and rides up pretty high so its kind of like being on a monorail, the other best bit is that there's no driver! I don't know how it works without a driver, I don't really care to be honest, all I care is that no driver means you can sit right at the front of the train and watch everything as if you were in the passenger seat of a car.

Sitting at the front of the train is some of the most awesome site seeing you can ever do in London I think, Docklands has some awesome buildings, some new and some old - there's Greenwich which is awesome, Canary Wharf which I love (I wear jeans to work so its a novelty for me to go there) and Thames Barrier Park.

Nowadays I try to go on the DLR at least once a fortnight, the landscape you see from the window is unlike anything in central London plus it costs the same price as a normal tube journey - awesome.
