New to the Lane

4.0 out of 5.0

October 01, 2008

Formerly the Magdala and located on the quirky Lordship Lane, this gastro pub has undergone a major refurbishment. Gone is the hideous yellow exterior and the dark interior, replaced with a bright and airy room decorated in muted tones. The room is split into a front bar area, a back dining/restaurant area and also includes a lovely beer garden out back and some tables outside at the front. As we were with dog, we opted for the beer garden out back. A waitress came out to take our orders and bring some water for the dog which was a nice touch. A glass of crisp prosecco for me and a cold beer for my husband as we perused the short but well thought out menu. Despite the warm weather, we both decided to go for the roasts - Lamb for husband and half a poussin for myself. The roasts were well sized and presented nicely on the plate. Both came with small manageable Yorkshire puddings, some lovely caramelized parsnips, a couple of roast potatoes and best of all some slightly crunch veg - hurrah! I really have a pet peeve about overcooked vegetables that have all the life boiled out of them. We followed with a slice of moist carrot cake (me) and some apple pie for the other half.
At £52 for 2 glasses of prosecco, a glass of wine, one beer, two roasts and two desserts this place is very good value for money. They are still finding their feet, and we observed some issues with orders/service on the other tables, but our experience was good. A good addition to East Dulwich and I will be back at the weekend.
