Our Favourite in St Ives
October 22, 2008
The Porthminster Cafe is right above Porthminster Beach in St Ives and is a lovely place to have lunch, Creamed Teas and dinner. We had lunch there a couple weekends ago during our “Indian Summer” which consisted of 4 days of nice weather – around 20 degrees –but boy did we get lucky! We sat outside overlooking the blue-green sea, people watching those brave enough to go swimming in mid October and then all the beachcombers.
The menu is full of fish, as expected being in Cornwall. And it’s all about the daily catch. I had a lovely roasted butternut squash soup with saffron and goat’s cheese to start; my husband had the oysters. Both were delicious and light. My main was actually another starter but large enough to be a main: Asian crab salad. It was good although I had buyers remorse with my husband’s John Dory with crab.
The service was attentive and cheerful and the price with a bottle of champagne came to around £60. So a little steep but you pay for the fresh fish and amazing views of both old town St Ives and the sea. I’ve been told it’s one of the best restaurants in Cornwall and certainly the best in St Ives. Make sure to book. Even in October, it fills up.
