Best pan-Asian restaurant in town

5.0 out of 5.0

December 07, 2010

Cool interiors and gadgets, lovely staff and delicious food. Knocks spots off all those pile-it-high and add-a-kilo-of-MSG Chinese restaurants in town (and every other town for that matter).

Has none of the horrendous glitz of other big, nasty asian-style restaurants (yes, you can employ as many lovely Thai staff as you like, it doesn't make your restaurant either good or authentic); it does have all the delicate and delightful dishes that make pan-asian food such a fantastic alternative to those lovely big, rambunctious flavours of Indian/Pakistan-style cuisine (of which there are some good examples in Liverpool).

Lots of nice twists to classics like Thai red curry; HoSt's take on this one is to add lovely duck and lychees to the mix. Fabulous sea bass with Vietnamese hot sauce - good for clearing blocked sinuses AND delicious. Clearly fresh ingredients, clearly head and shoulders above the Wagamamas and other once-good-but-now-only-in-it-for-the-cash chains.

Fusion comes to the 'Pool

Host is located on the corner of Hope St and Falkner St in a beautifully designed space. Long refectory type tables, funky lighting and contemporary yet retro feel with a 50's colour palette. The food is fantastic with dishes delicious duck gyoza (deep fried japanese dumplings), duck and lychee red curry with jasmine rice which is sublime, beers including Tiger and Asahi which are 2 of my favorites. Ironically Wagamama has just opened in Liverpool recently but this feels much more like the real deal.
