Cafe Rouge is a chain of Brasserie-style restaurants serving a range of light meals and drinks within a French atmosphere. There is a large choice of dishes as well as hot and cold drinks which makes this restaurant a good stop off point for tea and snacks rather than grand dinners. This branch can be hired out for private functions. Pavement seating is provided.

Francais? Je ne sais pas!

2.0 out of 5.0

October 10, 2008

Having been to Cafe Rouge a few times I was fully prepared for an average quality, average priced meal. They have a menu with a french 'feel', however, if you have dined frequently in France then this is not the place for you!

For example, the steak hache was cooked well done when asked for as medium rare, & the vennison was also cooked well done when asked for as medium rare (or course a massive faux pas as what chef would ever cook vennson well done)? The vennison took forever to arrive, & when asked as to why the delay I was told that it was because it was being cooked the way it should be??? It was very obviously pan fried & overcooked -had it been cooked correctly then it would have taken at most 10 minutes for the size. The manager was quite rude to us throughout our dining experience, & please be assured that we were not vocal about our dissapointment at the time!

Very dissapointing for 'french' cuisine. If you don't care about the french authenticity then it is a nice family place that serves average food with a price to match. If you DO want proper french cuisine then there are at least 2 other restaurants in Nottingham that would fit the bill much better!

Surprisingly good for kids

4.0 out of 5.0

I took our 2 kids (3 and 0) to this place on my own with a selfish motive - I like steak and chips done the french way. I was pleased and surprised to find it very convenient for kids. First of all, there is an entry around the side for wheelchairs and pushchairs which means no steps to negotiate. Then they gave my 3 yr old a sheet and some crayons to keep her occupied while I sorted out the baby. He got a high chair and his baby food warmed up (this in itself is unusual - a lot of places refuse to do this on the grounds you could sue them if your babies mouth gets burnt), and I got a glass of wine. Perfect. The meal was delivered in good time and was delicious. Then my 3 yr old decides she needs the loo. This could be tricky, however, there is a baby changing room on the same floor, and it's huge, with a toilet, so we all go and baby gets a nappy change too.
Now the really good bit. My 3 yr old, starts to run around the restaurant singing, and the staff don't bat an eyelid.
Needless to say the meal was very good french cuisine.
I would recommend this place to anyone wanting a family meal. I'm going back again.
