The Best Fish & Chips in the South

5.0 out of 5.0

March 19, 2008

Everyone knows that Southerners can't make a decent chippy. I know I'm American- but I lived in Southport (near Liverpool) for almost two years, so I know what it's like to miss a good takeaway. The Rock and Sole is like, so totally bangerang though!

Upstairs is small and downstairs is downright scary. I mean it's all decorated like an aquarium, but basically it freaks me out because you're in a windowless basment room with happy dolphins painted on the walls.

I wouldn't recommend getting anything but the fish (however my boyfriend says the saveloy and battered sausage are up to snuff). My favourite is the lemon sole which is delicately battered and cooked to perfection. The chips are fluffy and thickly cut, floating in vinegar. Like, you know, real chips, not fries.

It's pretty pricey for a chipey, but then again it's in covent garden so what the hell did you expect? You'll pay around £10 for a large Fish and Chips and a beer. Not too bad int he summer when you can sit outside and watch the lost tourists as they look for CV tube station.
