All department stores should be like Libertys, although this is about as far from your regular department store as you'd be able to imagine.
The building stands out in central london with it's iconic black and white exterior and beautiful wooden interior make Libertys worth visiting even if your not in the mood for shopping, I find walking from floor to floor incredibly relaxing.
Although they have the latest designers and cosmetic products in store there is something quintessentially british and quaint about the store. You can still buy their traditional Tana Lawn fabric and craft supplies in their haberdashery (what a wonderful word - so seldom used) and their tea room means that you can rest your feet while having a proper English cream tea.
Compared to the vastness of Selfridges and the functional appearence of John lewis shopping at Libertys is still a real experience.

Liberty is my absolute favourite London shop, much to the dismay of my husband. I can't go near Oxford Circus without a quick snoop around. In fact, If I could, I'd probably move in.
Housed mostly within a creaky old Tudor building, the interior is a treasure trove of goodies, but never feels crowded or claustrophobic. Dark wood panelling adds to the calming atmosphere. The designer collections are well chosen - mixing the well known with the up and coming whilst also providing exposure to some of the smaller labels. The shoe room is a girls dream. A great selection of offbeat cosmetics, home ware, jewellery, furniture and gift items are also available.
Staff are friendly and helpful and never overbearing - they have the service down just right. There's also a chocolate shop, a tea room upstairs and a newly opened oyster and champagne bar in the basement for those in need of some mid afternoon decadence.
The sales are also well worth a visit, but be ready to do some serious preparation in advance of the opening. Make sure you get the Liberty card - points equals prizes, and you get additional discounts throughout the year, money off vouchers, and invites to seasonal preview evenings with canapés and wine.
