Better than China Town

5.0 out of 5.0

Bayswater is an odd area, really best summed up as transient. However, the hostels and tourists traps should be merely accepted as there are real gems to find, with the Kam Tong being the diamond in the rough.

Kam Tong has been at the centre of Queensway fine dining for over three decades now, indeed I still recognise a couple of waiters who worked there when I went as a kid. It's the kind of Chinese restaurant that is frequented by the Chinese, and even they travel from all over London to eat. And it's with good reason. The food, the Dim Sum in particular, is second to none.

Queues hit the pavement on the weekend (push your way in and give your name to the maƮtre d') but you'll find Dim Sum served every day until 5pm. Highly recommended is the Chueng Fun, best described as Chinese cannelloni. Soft, gelatinous rice pasta rolls filled with prawns, char sui pork or beef.

Other more standard dishes are also excellent, unctuous roast duck, crisp chili beef, and monks vegetables all standing out.

Kam Tong is expensive, certainly above average, but you're unlikely to have such good Chinese in London for less.
