The French House Dining Room

The French House Dining Room is located above a pub in Soho and has an old fashioned feel to it, enhanced by its wood panelling and bare floorboards. The a la carte menu changes daily and offers a variety of modern British and European dishes. They have an extensive list of mostly French wines. In addition they can cater for private parties of up to 30 people.

Downstairs, My Favorite Pub

This review is for the French House pub downstairs, not for the restaurant, for which I can never seem to get a reservation.

No matter - after enough half pints at the French House, I usually don't fancy a fancy meal anyhow.

Being one of the smallest pubs in Soho - if not in London - the French House is by default the most social. By virtue of its size, it's almost impossible NOT to get into conversations with the people around you. Terrible if you're a private, reserved individual. Brilliant if you're a friendly repeat visitor like me. Not being a local, I appreciate that I can meet and converse with actual locals without any awkwardness.

The French House goes far to make a socially conducive atmosphere. Mobile phones are not allowed, and only half-pints are served to encourage you more trips to the bar.

As a warning to my fellow testosterone-laden lads out there: Despite the highly social atmosphere, this is NOT a place to come pull. Unless you're into a more middle-aged crowd (think: Mrs. Robinson with lousy teeth), you're better off coming here for good beer and conversation.

Added bonus for the upstairs having been, supposedly, Charles de Gaulle's headquarters for the French Resistance back in Dubya Dubya Two.
