fun steamy noodles

4.0 out of 5.0

September 16, 2009

I've been going to the Hare and Tortoise for about a year, and I've not had a bad experience. I love getting their big portion, it comes steaming hot; but then even when it cools down, there is still steam coming out from the bottom of the bowl. They have good mid range wines and sake.
Its very convenient for the area. There isn't that much around Russell Square in the cheap and cheerful category, and this place is a good option for portion, menu and price.
There's always a long line, but somehow we always get in pretty fast. Lunch or dinner, its always packed.

addictive

Living a block away from here makes this place a little too accessible... therefore addictive. Never be discouraged by the lines outside... the most you'll wait is 10 minutes. And they pass out menus outside, so as soon as you sit, they're ready to take your order. The food isn't super memorable, but definitely affordable, great quality, and delicious!

Good fast food

For a cheap, nutritious meal in Bloomsbury, it's hard to beat the oddly named Hare & Tortoise (it's Asian food, after all). The proof of the pudding is in the queues of people waiting eagerly at the door nightly. Service is fast and the wait is rarely long, so it's worth trying if you aren't in a hurry.

Good Food, Fair Prices in Central?!

3.0 out of 5.0

Hare & Tortoise has a great selection of different Asian cuisines - from Chinese, Japanese to Malaysian. The rice plates, noodle plates and ramen soup noodle bowls are by far the best value - a meal at 6 pounds. The sushi is nothing amazing, and although not expensive for London, not the best value compared to everything else there. The three flavour ice creams for dessert (chestnut, black sesame and green tea) sound a bit strange, but are delicious! I usually share with a friend after being full from the main course to begin with.
It gets busy, especially on weekends and later in the evenings after 7:30pm or so. Be prepared to wait in line for a little bit sometimes, but usually it moves pretty fast and is worth it for a decent meal for a decent price.
