Classic Pub That Gets it Right
November 07, 2007
The Marquis of Granby is in many respects just an average pub, but if you ask me what separates it from all the others throughout London, it is the execution. This pub fulfills the true mission of a public house, which is to facilitate people gathering, meeting, engaging with each other. The Marquis of Granby is a great place to meet a friend for lunch, for a pint or just a casual chat.
It's not terribly large, but I found that instead of getting crowded, it instead just tends to be about full. That makes the place have a level of chatter that could be distracting or overpowering, but it also gives the place a pulse.
The crowd at the Marquis is informed by the neighborhood, as is to be expected. To some extent you may need to worry about rolling your eyes at the various snatches of overheard conversation from the collected new media goons, but by and large I wouldn't worry about it too much. Plus, the bartender when i was there was quite merry and helpful, so that helps tamp down any amount of self-important drivel that may come from some of the Charlotte Street crowd.
