The Newman arms has an olde-world feel with its low ceilings and flag stoned passage. It is famous for its homemade pies but also serves vegetarian dishes. Seating on the pavement area is provided, weather permitting.

The ONLY place for meat pies

4.0 out of 5.0

October 12, 2007

It actually took me over a year to try one because they sounded so disgusting. When I think of pies, I think of sweet - like apple, peach, pecan, coconut cream - not a meat one. So I was clearly turned off by even trying one until I went to Newman Arms.

For around £8, you get a massive pie, similar to what I've always considerd a "pot pie", loaded with whatever meat (they always have a vegie one too) you ordered and best of all, topped with a flaky croissant-like crust. They come piping hot, so you mash the top crust into the pie and it melts. No calories whatsoever, I'm sure.

This is the perfect place to go with friends or partner or out of town guests who want the true English pie experience. The dining room is small though with only about 7 tables, so make sure to book. You won't be disappointed.

Comfort food for moody winter

5.0 out of 5.0

October 01, 2007

Now that we are back into moody winter day straight from the moody summer and forgiving fashion of overcoats its time to get a pie treat to brighten up your working day.
I give this place 5 stars, because of the combination of things that appeals to me rather than just food.
Its awesome value for your money and a yummy comfort food of traditional pies. The place has to be booked in advance, and they only serve pies between 12:00 - 15:00.
They have glowing reviews from a number of sources and there are rumors of many celebrities visiting it as well. I must say i have not spotted any, but food is delicious. If pies could be called gourmet food, then this is definitely as close as it gets.
Now, back to the gym ;)
