Charming Spot in Hoxton Sq
February 07, 2008
Normally I am frankly rather wary of businesses in Hoxton Square. They have tended to let me down, usually by being either too pretentious or too pathetic. Macondo breaks the mold.
Although it is a rather puny place, Macondo is a great place to spend a relaxing afternoon, or even to meet mates for a couple drinks in the night. The place has a somewhat eclectic interior, and if you are a tall person like myself, you have to watch your head as you make your way to the counter - there's an art installation that dangles down rather low, so beware.
Still, if you can make it through the perils, you'll be rewarded with the mellow vibe and casual attitude of this Mexican cafe. I haven't had much food at Macondo, although I have often been tempted to visit for the huevos rancheros breakfast, but I have tossed back plenty of bottles of Pacifico. Smoker friendly, as well, with a heated and partially covered deck in the front.
