Ex warehouse space

1.0 out of 5.0

August 04, 2007

Canvas or Bagleys as it was previously known tried to adapt to the times by separating a huge warehouse space for thousands of people into three different bits. Navigationally and structurally this partly worked, however, I still think the sound is actually comparably quite poor. It is located in the same, a bit rough, area around Kings X as the Key or the Cross. Based on three experiences I made up my mind that I won't bother with this venue unless absolutely unavoidable. Reason 1: The general feel is a bit naked, no green, no trees except a few sofas inside and little other effort to inspire not only the ears but the eyes as well Reason 2: During a Masters at Work night, the place was too loud, no movement possible and nowhere to settle down which exposes weakness in the way the masses move there when it is really busy Reason 3: (and the death nail and my defining moment, which landed this place in my bad books probably forever) When Quentin Harris was over from New York playing in the back room, the management shut down the room after he played not even 1 hour because apparently 'there were not enough people' (well at least I counted 50-60 dancing in the room) to save money on the bar staff. You don't do that to clubbers and DJs who came for a particular reason just to save a few quid!, Never, ever! Timmy Regisford in the other room of course was not bad but this type of behaviour is absolutely unacceptable, disgraceful and caused a lowpoint in transatlantic dancemusic relations. Ending on a more positive note, the Body and Soul night in July 2007 with 3 NY DJs was legendary, top, nearly perfect. However, good DJs deliver, often despite suboptimal venues, but it swayed opinions again (a tiny bit) in the other direction.
