Tasty Thai

4.0 out of 5.0

January 25, 2008

Thai Candle is a great little neighborhood restaurant. The place is a bit cozy (read: small), with about 12 tables in a somewhat narrow room, but the place is brightly lit and cheerily designed so you don't feel claustrophobic.
I popped in here for a late lunch, and they happily assented to letting me have a lunch special even though it was a bit late. It is a pretty good deal, a starter and main for 10 pounds. My waitress didn't try to push a drinks order on me and dutifully refilled my tap water several times throughout the meal.
For my ten pounds I got a neatly presented plate with my spicy noodle dish and hot Thai soup, both with satisfactory portions. Now when I said spicy, I mean hot! I somehow managed to inhale one of the peppers straight off of the bat and was sniffling and coughing for the rest of the meal, no doubt to the consternation of my fellow diners. That said, the food was great and didn't skimp on the heat which has sometimes happened to me at other Thai restaurants.
In the end, Thai Candle isn't worth crossing town to visit, but if you find yourself in the neighborhood, it is a great spot to satisfy your urge for Thai.
