Too much icing!

3.0 out of 5.0

December 08, 2008

We've had lots of important client meetings recently, and our standard biscuits while Fairtrade have really horrible packaging - so we've been getting cupcakes from Peyton & Byrne.

The shop itself is a delight, a little box of colour sandwiched between the consciously tasteful Heals and Habitat. However, the cupcakes just have too much icing - and if you don't go for one of the flavoured cakes they taste like cardboard. Which is pretty disappointing because they look lovely.

If you want a tasty overpriced cupcake (for the £2.50 each cake costs you could probably buy the ingredients to make a whole tray) go to Lantana on Charlotte Place where they have lovely Hummingbird cakes. mmmmm.

However, the rest of the cakes and biscuits are pretty good, and you can get nice tins of biccies etc that will make anyone smile on a special occasion.

Sugar Rush

This tiny cake shop in the entrance to Heals is a real delight. After splurging on some soft furnishings, you can indulge your sweet tooth. There's nothing like spending vast sums of money and mainlining sugar to give yourself a buzz. Specializing in all things English, Peyton and Byrne have a great selection - millionaires shortbread, gingerbread biscuits, scones, muffins, carrot cake, sponge cakes - you name it, they bake it. It's amazing how they fit it all into the shop. The colourful fairy cakes lining the window are delightfully camp and they have savoury pies for those who need something a bit more substantial, but my heart belongs to those fabulous teacakes.
