The Bacchus is def a top Tip. The food was awesome; staff were great, gave us excellent table service (though I heard from my neighbours they mixed up a couple plates...oh well); the space is relaxed, comfortable and nicely decorated; only disappointment was a poor beer selection. For my starter I had lamb cutlets with a giant artichoke heart and tomato confit (£6.00), was perfect. For main had the pork chop with Savoy cabbage, apple and black pudding (£13.95), was perfect.

I never made it down to Bacchus when it was a straight restaurant so I was determined to try it out now that they'd changed to a Pub & Kitchen.

The decor was nice and simple, dark wood panelling, simple tables and chairs and a few sofas.

For food I had the Dover Crab on toast which was awesome, in fact I could have had 2 even though the portions were ample. For main I had Roast rump steak with chips and salad - the steak was awesome and so were the chips - I don't know what the sauce on the steak was but it was delicious. Some friends had the mushroom risotto which also looked very tasty. All in all my bill came to about 30 quid which considering how much I drank and how tasty the food was, it was fairly reasonable.

My favorite thing was that the lights in the toilets had a motion sensor so that they'd only be on when someone was in there - a nice little eco touch I thought.

I'll definitely be coming back here

Gone are the days where you sit at a restaurant table and order the food you already know! Surprise yourself with food pairing at Bacchus - a great introduction to what this restaurant serves. The atmosphere is relaxed and kids are welcome.

I went to Bacchus with my partner and we both agreed that we had one of the best meals we've had in London for a while.
The food was superb: so many new unique combinations of flavours and well presented dishes. We went for the full 9 courses with the wine pairing and I would recommend that you do this if you are going to go here.

The service was great: our waitress was really friendly and just attentive enough and when we asked about the inspirations for the dishes, the chef came over to our table and had a chat with us.

I would recommend Bacchus to anyone who is looking for something special.
I also loved that there was music on the background (and I'm not talking about elevator music.they played the smiths, kings of leon, amy winehouse, the kooks...) which made the atmosphere a lot more relaxed than in many other fine dining restaurants.

By the way, the picture you have of Bacchus must be really old as it now looks nothing like that now! :)

Bacchus from the brink

I think the previous review of the Bacchus is unduly harsh. I can imagine that when the circular baths are on the blink the overall experience is marred; regardless of bin men or the ungentrified nature of that particular area of Hoxton.
My dinner was superb, the staff, although a little over enthusiastic, were courteous and well informed of the complicated sous-vide method of cooking. There is a distinctive air of aspiration which is not to be confused with either pretension or fat-duck-copy-cattery. The food is expensive; maybe a little too expensive for the area but if you've got time and money to appreciate a long, flamboyant and distinctly different dining experience, i would strongly recommend the Bacchus.

Had dinner here a while back and it must have been one of the worst meals of my life. The staff were unfriendly and unwelcoming, and tried to seat us at the back near the restrooms even though we had made a booking a while back and the restaurant was half empty. They didn't have any of the wines we wanted to order from the menu, and their "special cooking machine" was broken which apparently cooks meat in a superior way. The mains were ridiculously overpriced and no sides were recommended so we left hungry despite having paid vast amounts of money. The location isn't quite hip old street - it's down hoxton market, and on the evening we were there, we had the delightful addition of the flashing lights from the rubbish truck as it was clearing the market to accompany our meal. This place so badly wants to be the Fat Duck, but fails miserably on all accounts.
