More Than Tapas
July 18, 2007
While Laxeiro has a long tapas list covering all of the classics - paella, chorizo, various seafood, pimientos di padron, patatas bravas and so on (and I have selected off it an been delighted) - I actually want to tell folks about its weekend morning offerings...
EAT Fine pastry treats! The Spanish name slips my mind right now but if you've a sweet tooth and like custard tarts come just for the custard tarts - they're silky smooth, pastry flakes everywhere and they go down well with coffee (or hot choc, if you've the Mother of All Sweet Teeth). DRINK I've been known to have a morning tipple but generally, given I'm there for the sweet treats, I'd recommend coffee - not the world's best cup but inoffensive enough and in my view best accompaniment to the pastries. FEEL Totally different if you're there of an evening, but Sunday mornings are delightful...couples, singles, families, and I'm pretty sure I've spotted some morning-after-the-first-dates there too (don't ask me how I know). Being on Colombia Road it'd be hard not to attract the flower market-going crowd. Expect to step over flower pots/ bags/ bunches at busiest times. TOP TIP Outdoor tables - there are only three or four so get there before the heaviest market traffic (before 10am) - or just cross fingers. PRICE Two pastries, two hot drinks = around £10.
