Old Timer's Pub

3.0 out of 5.0

October 23, 2007

I was heading for another decidedly hip bar in the area, but found it closed for the night. Not satisfied to trudge home without satisfying the booze gods, I decided to duck into this pub, which I had noticed walking by a few minutes before. Talk about an old timer's place!
I don't mean to say that in a negative way, it seemed pretty clear to me that this (very Irish) pub was perfectly satisfied with itself, and I presume (or at least earnestly hope) that it has the neighborhood regulars it needs to survive into the future. The kind but no-nonsense bartender forked over reasonably priced pints in between chats with some of said regulars, and turned off the music to tune into the evening news bulletin from an Irish broadcaster.
This place didn't seem likely to attract a young crowd, but it was a reasonably sizable place, with darts and pool as well as a menu of pub grub. The decor also deserves mention, with scores of old steins and mugs hanging from the (high) ceiling, as well as the expected street signs and posters of green Irish fields - there was also a peculiarly out of place poster with Chinese characters, I dunno what that was about..
This isn't the sort of pub that I'd find myself walking into every day, and I don't necessarily expect to return again, but I wish it well.
