Great Dim Sum

4.0 out of 5.0

October 29, 2007

Royal China is one of the many Chinese restaurants plying their trade on Queensway in Bayswater, but for my money it is the best. The place looks a bit small from the outside, but after you pass through the reception the space widens out to a well-sized dining room, with one or two private rooms in the back. On a Saturday or Sunday morning the place gets packed, so prepare to wait for up to 20-30 minutes. I believe they only take reservations for particularly large groups (6+?) so you just have to deal with it.
It's worth the wait, once you get seated and the dim sum starts circling around. Plenty of yummy choices, capably prepared and quickly served. With dim sum, I always say the secret is to be open to everything and anything, so when something passes by that you don't recognize, don't bother trying to ask what it is (sometimes English comprehension isn't a given), just dig in and enjoy the rich flavors.
Probably not the cheapest dim sum you can find in London, but high quality for the money and a nice bustling, but not rushed, atmosphere in which to enjoy it.
