The Clarence London Reviews

Good - Went there yesterday and enjoyed it that much sat with Mrs Mullet and Drank 2 bottles of Malbec.
Good place Good music and from what I saw, very good food, this was obvious by the amount of people eating and the obvious enjoyment on their faces...I just wanted to Booze you see but I will be going back to try out there fabby looking roast.
The good thing also is the smoking yard,I believe that this is important for a pub to have, as I for one hate standing out in the middle of the street to have a puff and made to feel like I am doing something wrong and criminal....basically they have a courtyard which is very warm indeed as it is surrounded by the building itself so you are in a well courtyard...it is obvioulsy outside but they have their heaters working so you dont get cold...Defo going back

such a cute dog - I love the decor, I love the food, I love the fact it's five minutes from my house.
It's definitely a gastropub but it doesn't lack charm or soul like so many nouveau boozers do and it's a great place for late brunch on a saturday or sunday.

Noisy, but nice - The Clarence first popped out of the Balham woodwork a few years back and seemed to be an instant hit, being trendy without being impersonal and relaxed without feeling lazy.

I have never been there when it hasn't been busy, which may have something to do with the excellent table service (you needn't move all evening - bliss), tasty gastro pub grub and a good, constantly changing selection of beers behind the bar.

Although it can get crowded and noisy at the weekend (the music level can sometimes be a bit high) as long as you arrive relatively early and bag a table, the at-table service means that you'll never need to queue at the bar. Bonus!

There is a small outside space specifically for smokers and a terrace with tables for food and drink.

The first in a series of similar pub refurbishments (The Florence in Herne Hill is part of the same company), the Clarence remains a firm Balham favourite of mine.

Four out of five. It would get five if they turned down the music when it's so busy that you *already* need to raise your voice to be heard.
