Super Awesome Bookshop - I've walked past this place so many times but never stepped foot inside until yesterday. I think it's because the place looks so small I figured they wouldn't have much of a selection but you know what - I stand corrected.
Granted the upstairs (ground floor) is pretty small - they had a good selection of fiction and poetry but it was a bit cramped so I turned to leave and noticed that there were some stairs heading down to a lower floor.
The lower floor is wayyyyy bigger than upstairs and had really well curated sections - good fiction, a nice philosophy section, a selection for people like Malcom Gladwell etc. There was a little table that had a bunch of books from an independant publisher about exploration in Canada, America and other places. They had a large travel section and some good bits about food. I ended up buying a book of surrealist London pub reviews.
I think the way a bookshop shows it's mettle is not in being able to supply you any book under the sun that you wish to purchase, but in the ability to make you leave the shop having purchased one or more books that you never even knew existed but are completely suited to your tastes. In the same way a record shop owner might be able to tell you about a band that you've never heard of before but end up loving so a bookshop should be able to open your eyes to writers that you've never heard of before - this is one such bookshop - awesome.
