I've never been one for Christmas presents, neither has my usual London partner-in-crime, so I was over the moon when this year he suggested we do away with the hassle of the christmas shopping nightmare and go for a great meal in the New Year instead.

We were going to book for a couple of weeks time but, with a spare evening in hand, decided to chance it and turn up without a reservation at about quarter to seven on sunday. The place was fairly busy and it turns out, heavily reserved, but we were offered a table until 8. There were also loads of unreserved seats on the various counters around the room, along the bar, back wall and next to the kitchen. (Good for brunch, probably less for dinner!).

The food here is simple British stuff, done brilliantly. Being a sunday, roasts were the order of the day, with four different meats on offer (beef, lamb, pork and chicken) and vegetable sides to order separately. The ingredients are top quality (particularly the meat, I have since found out some is supplied by my favourite Borough market trader) and everything was perfectly cooked. The gratin dauphinoise was a particular standout - better than I've ever had in France (this comment raised mild surprise from the French lady on the table next to me, definitely the truth mind), and the roasted vegetables were beautifully done.

After dinner we were told that we could keep the table for longer should we wish, as they had managed to rearrange people around us, and were offered desserts. Partner-in-crime is not so much of a dessert eater but I twisted his arm, and we ordered a baked alaska for two. Probably one of the best decisions we have ever made - it was absolutely perfect and flamboyant, tall and flaming at the table. There was more than enough for both of us but we still managed it all, absolutely delicious, again the best I have had.

Tom's Kitchen knows what it is doing, simple great quality British food in a wonderfully informal atmosphere, and does it very well indeed.

Best christmas present I ever got.
