Eastenders Adopt Trendy
December 06, 2008
I live very close to the Lauriston... but it took me almost a year to go in there. It looks very Islington "I'm in my early 30's and a yuppy" so I always thought it was best the likes of my belligerent ass avoid it.
However recently a friend of mine started putting on a pub quiz every other Wednesday night there so I decided it was time for me to give it a go.
Victoria Park Village is a weird little enclave of middle class suburbia smack in the middle of Cockney east end London. I'm not particularly keen on it since I usually love all things Cockney and hate all things middle class, but I do occasionally wander around and buy a four quid cupcake. However the Lauriston seems to be a nice little exception to the VPV exclusionary rule.
In the Lauriston habitat trendy yuppies and working class Cockneys freely mix in a conglomeration of medium priced booze, and deliciously cheap pizzas. You're more than likely to see some pierced, ripped jeans model photographer having a ciggy next to an orange-tinted lovely wearing little to no clothing. I like it.
The pub quiz was hilarious. Not only because the very entertaining host wears a sequined jacket, but it's packed and rowdy and filled with Eastenders shouting which always makes for excitement. Although I didn't win the quiz, I still had a good time and usually I'm a pretty sore loser.
All in all I'm not ashamed to admit I was wrong... the Lauriston is actually a cool place to come for a few bevies and people watch, and the Wednesday quiz is a definite must. If you do go, make sure you heckle the quiz host as much as possible; his name rhymes with "bonking".
