Once nice, gone horribly wrong...

How times change. This used to be a lovely quirky pub. But was in the Island Queen the other night and the service has become to say the least a little angsty. You can't you not play your own music if you rent the room upstairs (which is lovely decor wise and a bit of a find), as the venue doesn't have a PRS license for anything but library music (!). Hard to imagine anyone in trendy Islington wanting to put up with a single CD of library music (bizarre).

Not only this but we had to endure a self-important member of staff who was helping out when off duty (and drunk) who then got abusive with a lady in our party and tried to start a fight with two different people and called a customer "a b**ch". Hardly inspiring customer service! I hear it's become a chain pub now so don't be fooled by the (admittedly lovely) Edwardian interior. Same jobsworth attitude you get in chain pubs too often. Avoid.

Great locals-only pub off the beaten track. Great decor (or lack thereof) and a wide variety of beers on top. The food is fairly good for pub food but this place is primarily a refuge from the masses on Upper Street, and an excellent one at that.

Great local boozer tucked away in Islington. This pub has a very laid back feel with a fair selection of beer and wine, foods ok and the music is cool.
Back in the late 70's i visited a pub in London which had
mannequins hanging from the ceiling, but i couldn't remember what it was called or where it was. Fast forward to 2007 and now living in Islington checking out the local bars i stumbled across the Island Queen. Turns out this was the pub i originally visited, the mannequins no longer hang from the ceiling, they now reside in the celler.

I couldn't decide whether to write a review of this place or not, as I would prefer to keep it to myself!!
The pub is hidden away in a quiet residential area round the back of the Regents Canal. They do food but I wouldn't recommend it, just come along have a pint and soak up the atmosphere.
As this place is off the beaten track it doesn't get too packed.............let's keep it that way.
