Late Beers & Boys
March 20, 2008
I usually try to go to places a couple times before reviewing, but not sure when I’ll get back to EDVI, so here goes...it was 12:59 last Sat night as I scooted into the Angelic for last call, but when I ordered a beer I got the ol “sorry fella, closed”. Said ok, walked out, calm, polite, but thinking to myself “f**k me I come here 2 nights a week and you can’t give me a beer a minute before closing time”.
So I walked down the street to find something open, a block away found EDVI, went in, sat at the bar, ordered a beer, the gal was glad to serve me, all was very good. As I drank my beer and looked around I noticed it was all dudes, quickly put the pieces together and though “hmmm”. So here I am in a gay bar by myself at 1:10, not sure how that’ll look or what I’ll do? I guess I’ll make the most of it and maybe get a review together for my 4 gay friends. So here’s what I recall.
The guys seem nice enough, although probably not the best looking gay guys in London, a bit older, bit pudgier and plenty of shiny heads. A couple came up and chatted, but quickly scattered when they learned the score. The guy next to me though was really nice, guy called Mike, he kind of explained the place to me. He said it was a bit of a shit hole, but was his local and he liked it, came 2 – 3 times a week, referred to it as “Cheers for Queers”. We chatted for a while, I had another beer, met 2 people that work at a pub around the street, and that was about it.
In a sentence: plenty of lagers, a few wines, open really late, nice staff, lot a gay guys on the pull, and free condoms. Give it a go next time in Islington.
