It makes me happy

5.0 out of 5.0

November 05, 2008

And ne'er was a truer word spoke than the opening line of Tequila by Terrorvision.

Tequila makes me very, very happy, and so Green and Red, a Mexican joint with more varieties than you can shake a salt-shaker at, is onto a winner before I set foot through the door.

I understand there are two parts to this place, the restaurant upstairs and the bar downstairs, and that they are distinct and pretty much operate independently. (I have never really worked this out (probably the tequila) but I do know there are certain drinks you can get at one bar and not the other..) The fun is to be had downstairs, anyway.

The tequila is good. Really good. Too many people shy away from it because they have had a bad night on some cheap sh*t when already too drunk. This is the kind of place you can start out on the decent cocktails and really enjoy how it is meant to taste! The bartenders... cocktail guys... mixologists... whatever really know their stuff and relish making you something of their choice then telling you all about it. The DJ seems to know what he's doing too, good tunes perfectly fitting. It all makes for a good atmos really, with people on the lounging leather sofas and a bunch of others dancing around them.

All that and it's not bad value either. £6 for a (strong!) cocktail, £5 for a Sol and a shot, £10 for five shots.

Arrrrribaaa!

Good Tequila, Good food

4.0 out of 5.0

I took my mum and some friends here who were visiting London. We hadn't planned it and turned up on a really busy night without booking. We were accommodated, with a bit of table shuffling, and ended up having a really good night. Not just because we got free large tequila's (due to a minor table mix up that didn't affect us!), free food (we got the wrong order sent to our table which we were then told to keep as well as the food we had ordered!), and our bill was knocked by 50% (for reasons we're still unsure of!), but because the food is really nice; not your typical fajita business which I'm told is Tex Mex. My favourite was a calamari and coriander starter, really tasty. It was chaotic, busy and noisy, but the staff were friendly and it was a good atmosphere. Good if you're up for a fun night with friends.

Not a burrito in sight

From all counts the food in Mexico is erm, not that great. I’ve never been so I can’t give you my opinion, but a lot of my friends have lived there and the general consensus is that they don’t really miss the cuisine.

So we shouldn’t have high hopes for an authentic Mexican place in East London? There’s no tex-mex here, it’s all chayote and red meat – I think you can get nachos and stuff as bar snacks though.

The first time I went I thought it was pretty amazing, but that’s maybe because I’d drowned myself in El Burro’s (cocktails). The cocktails here are very good and very dangerous.

The food as you might have guessed is pretty hit and miss. The first time I went, I was totally smitten, which is why I went back. The second time the food was pretty bland.

Very authentic and tasty

If you're into texmex, then this might not be the place for you. If, however, you like real authentic Mexican food and good, strong margheritas then check this place out. Its right at the Bethnal Green end of Brick Lane (so plenty of local bars to pop to en route/on way home). Everything (decor, service, food) is simple but highly effective. There's a choice of starters to share and then for mains you choose your meat/fish/veg of choice and get it served up with flour tortillas and salad etc - yum!

Best tequila selection in Europe

5.0 out of 5.0

Best tequila selection in Europe AND great food?!?! That would be enough, but add in a great, knowledgeable staff, an ultra cool atmosphere and location, and there is nearly nowhere better. There are no bad dishes on the menu, make sure to try the Herencia Reposado and the Verdita.

For a good tequila...

The tequila and margarita options were quite nice. I recommend the Pomegranate pitcher. Goes down really smoothly.

A little stingy on the chips and salsa (we had to ask quite a bit). Dessert options were skimpy (we were celebrating a birthday). For the main course-- the lamb was really nicely seasoned with a tasty sauce. There were not many veg options.

The staff were accomodating and even serenaded the birthday girl.

Tequila lovers paradise!

5.0 out of 5.0

This is my favourite Mexican restaurant with three bars over two floors. The food is excellent and the drinks you order with it too. This is a tequila lovers paradise with a selecion of over a hundred different kinds to offer as well as cocktails, Mexican beers and Latin American wine. The staff is friendly and can explain everything you´d like to know about both food and drink. Playing alot of reggaeton and Latin American tunes the dancefloor in the basement gets busy on Friday and Saturday nights, and if you don´t want to dance theres little "caves" with comfy sofas to just sit back and have a chat. Green & Red is a good night out in an exciting but chilled atmosphere. I love this place!
