DO NOT GO HERE. Upon visiting the pub to ask what time they served lunch we were very rudely told they weren't open yet. We managed to find out that, as they don't take bookings, we should arrive early as the pub itself is quite small. So we arrived in good time (midday) on the day in question, to find no-one else there until half an hour later, not all of whom were eating. We ordered our lunches, one of the group requesting the lamb to be cooked through as she was pregnant. The waiter curtly responded that the lamb comes medium/rare and that therefore our friend did not then have the right to complain if it was overdone. We then were told that the mushroom tart was not in fact a tart but mushrooms on toast, and the new potatoes with the mackerel would be replaced by toast also. One of the group asked if he could have a potato side dish, to be told abruptly "no" as they don't do sides. So we finished our meals (admittedly a mistake) and then decided we would politely ask if our bill could be reduced as half the menu was replaced with toast. The staff were not only extrememly rude in their response but tried to charge us for an extra main, presumably not expecting us to actually check our bill. Like I say, DO NOT COME HERE.

Before the pub Hobby set up an art gallery near Old St. that -apart from the art- was memorable for delicious food at the openings. The Charles Lamb was re-done a few years ago and is run by Camille and Hobby.- All pubs should be like this one. Friendly, pleasant. Good changing beers, interesting wines. The food is delicious.

Got some good hot spiced cider from here last week. Not as common in pubs as it used to be...

I adore this place and don't get there nearly as often as I'd like. It's a pub hangout for people like myself who aren't 'into' pubs and like a bit of class with their drinks. It's a fantastic find; well worth seeking out.

Wear flat shoes!

In a delightfully British take on the New York style Sex and the City brunch, I found myself sitting down to roast beef with 3 gal pals to ruminate over respective careers, dates and the Times university guide on Sunday. The food was good, the locale and decor good and freebie supplements appreciated. However, nothing made it past 'good'. Trying to get served at the bar to order our lunch was irritatingly difficult, the bar staff were friendly but too busy entertaining each other to take our money from us and allow us to go and sit down. I'm often in heels so this seriously irritates me. I would go here for Sunday lunch again but would pick somewhere else for a special Sunday treat.

I am not sure I would agree that this place is a "gastro pub" but it is definitely a great find. It feels hidden away behind Angel and I felt taken back in time on a Tuesday night. It has a down to earth feel with heathers on the table and candles in the fireplace.
I had a Lancashire hot pot which was very tasty and the smallish blackboard menu had a varied selection of food.
This place makes a refreshing change if you are heading out.

THE Best gastro pub in London

I love this place. It's quite a small, yet quaint, free-house pub. The staff are very chilled out and extremely friendly, The Sunday roast is one of the best I've ever had, and they stock St. peter's organic beer. What more could one want?

There's outdoor seating as well for those sunny days.

Throwing caution to the wind - get there early because this place fills up very, very quickly!

The pub dog, Mascha, kicks back and mingles with the patrons every day. She is very friendly and the staff tell me that she even has her own MySpace site!

Best Sunday Roast

I love the Charlest Lamb. It's an unassuming charming pub tucked in the side streets of Angel in Islington, off of Regent's Canal. Their sunday roasts are amazing. The beef is great but they always have something a little different than what you'd expect like duck. And my favourite is their trimmings such as roast potatoes, yorkshire puddings and sweetpotato or carrot & swede mash with gravy. Yum! Great selection of organic beers and microbrews from the US, as well as wine by the glass. This place is a jewel of a find.
