Excellent dim sum, crap cocktails

4.0 out of 5.0

March 18, 2008

A little weird to have dim sum in the evening but they do it so well I can understand why.

Fantastic menu - the right blend of fabulous new combinations (ostrich, quail, lobster dumplings) and old faves (duck pancakes).

Great atmosphere with beautiful decor and a fun perky vibe (sat night). Great date spot but big enough for parties.

Cocktails sounded good on the menu but were pretty crappy on arrival - lacked flavour and punch. Go with the wine, and skip the downstairs desserts (ordinary) for the cakes upstairs - they'll let you go up and choose and bring them down!

Dim Sum galore and yummy biscuits!

4.0 out of 5.0

Yauatcha is a chinese/asian eatery in central Soho. The decor is a highlight - upstairs light yet cosy, in the backdrop of the asian treats served for high tea. Downstairs really stunning, with a beautiful mix of lighting and glass.

This place is sister to Hakkasan and apparently has a Michelin star? I also read that the waiter's outfits were made by the costume designer from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Yauatcha is one of our favourite places for Dim Sum - serious melt in your mouth stuff. Its quit overwhelming to decide what to chose from the menu as the main courses are also excellent: I loved the Black Cod as well as the duck with pancaes. The £38 (!!) Wagyu beef was disappointing though.

Also disappointing was the service (oh, here we go again). There was no warmth, no explanation of the menu (it was like pulling teeth to get some more info) and our order for an extra order of Dim Sum was forgotten (since it was clear he wasn't listening when we ordered it so it never went through).

Another shame is that we got 3 dim sum in a basket when there were 4 of us sharing. C'mon guys - figure out a solution to this.

For dessert, there was no menu but specials were listed and didn't and the lack of enthusiasm during the description left us cold. We opted to order some biscuits/cookies from upstairs (hmmm, green tea, champagne, rapsberry flavours and more!). Now why didn't THEY think of that?

Oh yes, and great cocktail menu ... one of them had smashed grapes and looked like a work of art in the glass.

So I really recommend a meal at Yauatcha! You won't regret it.

Dumpling Delight

4.0 out of 5.0

With Dim Sum currently being one of the key trends across the London Dining scene, this is one of the places that started it all.
Pricier than some of the other chains across the city, however the food is fresh and made to order. I still have dreams of the scallop shu mai and the chilean sea bass is mouth meltingly divine. The surroundings are ultra glamorous and the cocktails superb.
Definitely one to try if you are partial to the delights of small parcels of steamed, fried or baked treats. For a different experience, come for Chinese tea and colourful cakes in the sleek tea room upstairs - also highly recommended.
