Cellar Door is an intimate bar under the Aldwych in a space just big enough for cats (both feline and human) to swing – imagine 30’s Berlin meets New York jazz dive. They’re open to 1am nightly and offer superb live jazz and cabaret along with excellent wines, beers, coffees and cocktails, not to mention the sexiest toilets in London.

Snuff

4.0 out of 5.0

They also sell snuff. SNUFF! On a tray with a snorting straw, fruity snuff.

I would describe this place thus: Cute in the extreme. Mostly unexpected. Drunken. Near lots of bus stops. One to pull out of the bag and impress new friends with!

One Hip Toilet

5.0 out of 5.0

July 13, 2008

One thing is for sure, going to the Cellar Door was the first time I've had cocktails and watched live music in a public toilet. But honestly, if you didn't know the history of the old underground toilets that dot London, all you would think is "Hmm, what a peculiar place for a bar." This is one hip toilet.

The cocktails run on the expensive side (not surprisingly given the postcode and the swanky vibe). Along with the classics, they have a long list of creative libations with the types of names that make you feel slightly foolish when you order them. "Yes, I'll have a White Lie, two Between the Sheets for my friends here, and a Tainted Love please." The real winner at the Cellar Door is the ambiance: friendly, lively, at times downright silly, plus the dark underground space evokes a classic cabaret speak-easy feel.

cabaret and cocktails

5.0 out of 5.0

I had so much fun here its untrue - firstly its in one of those old public toilets, no actually the first thing you notice is the name 'Cellar Door' say it, its meant to be the most inherently beautiful word or couple of words in the english language - I definitely like it. Anyway downstairs is pretty small but cosy rather than cramped - they've got table service and our waitress was a 7ft amazon wearing fairy wings!

The cocktails were good - I don't usually drink cocktails so I don't know if £7.50 is pricey but yeah they were good.

Awesome thing 4 is the toilet doors - they're clear glass but when you lock them they frost up - after a few cocktails locking and unlocking the door becomes the most awesome game you've ever played.

Awesome thing 5 was the music - proper cabaret singer and pianist except that they did mash-ups (for the record I hate that word) so they'd sing a Shaggy song over the top of a Sinatra tune or a White Stripes song over the top of a Shirley Bassey number - mash-ups can be cheesy but live, in a cabaret style it was awesome.

I'll definitely come back here
