The Vortex Jazz Club is a world-renowned jazz club in Dalston, North London. 2007 marks the club's 20th anniversary year. There is an eclectic programme of gigs on offer – in recent months, for example, Nigel Kennedy, Uri Caine, Norma Winstone and Bheki Mseleku have played at the club, as well as young new names such as Polar Bear and Led Bib. There is something to appeal to all musical tastes: straightahead, big-band, piano trio, vocal, free-impro, world-music, folk-orientated...and the unclassifiable.

...working to keep jazz live!

The Vortex is a legendary club as anyone who listens to Jazz will tell you. The move from Stoke Newington to Dalston seems like good thing as Dalston is fast becoming the new Hoxton. The place just feels so good, like how I imagine the small jazz clubs back in New York might have been, just a bar in the back, some old school marble top club tables, stage right on top of you, only thing missing was a thick fog of smoke, but I didn’t miss that a bit.

Music wise they cover it all, their website is always up to date, and it’s easy to by tickets. I recently saw Damon Brown & Yutaka Shiina Quartet, the latter apparently pretty well know in Jazz circles. All I can say is they were great and played for like 3 hours, amazing.

I don’t remember what kind of beer we were drinking, but I know they were big and cheap.
