London's Friendliest Pub
December 11, 2007
or CPT as it is more often known. Probably the friendliest pub in London, set a few streets back from the gastro-glamour of Lordship Lane it seems to draw a mostly local crowd from a wide surrounding area. The friendly, chatty, bar staff greet you with genuine warmth as if you're a long lost friend, nothing's too much trouble including switching the TV over to something you'd like to watch (unless someone else has a previous request in force) Remarkably for London it seems natural to strike up a conversation at the bar with complete strangers, where normally you would just get strange looks. The feeling is if you're there you must be one of us and you're ok - I've made a few good friends, and have even been adopted into someone's Birthday celebrations of a night, along with my companions and invited on to the next venue which happened to be The Black Cherry. There's a good selection of beers on tap including Old Speckled Hen, Adnam's Broadside, and most bottled beers and spirits.
The back room retains a very traditional members lounge feel with cosy corners, vintage photo's of the area on the walls, comfy antique furniture and period style wallpaper & carpeting, while the front room is bright and airy with wooden floors, high ceilings with big picture windows and a number of tables and chairs scattered around. Round the front and side there's a patio area with oxagonal wooden tables and picnic bench style seating to take advantage of good weather. Fairly standard pub food is available, and they do a great pub quiz evening on Wednesdays
Not really one for pub quiz evenings, I went along one Wednesday, and had a hoot, mostly down to the great atmosphere and friendly clientele. Great fun!
