Terrible Thai at Tudor Thai Square!
March 01, 2008
well where do i start -
To sum this place up, i have had far better takeaways and could have cooked better than what we had. If you really want a good authentic Thai, then drive to the Thai Orchid along the A5 near Markyate (1o mins outside of st Albans). For the money it would cost you at the Terrible Tudor Thai Square for a starter and main, you could have a gorgious authenic meal with drinks and still have change for the taxi!
If you want the full details read on.....
Nice greeting at the door from the several staff in the doorway (at least 4)
Sat at a table right in the middle of the room, asked to move and this was no problem at all, which was great.
Was given the drinks menu to discover a very broad range on offer, which included a 300 quid bottle of champagne and a full bottle of jack daniels, a snip at just a 120 quid!
This was just amusing to us though, and not really a fault, although we did find it a little odd, after all it is st albans not st tropez!
While looking at the menu, we were asked 4 times by different members of staff if we were ready to order , each time we said we had just been asked and would need a minute (obviously no clear section management among the staff)
Then the food, starters of, mixed dimsum - meant to be a mixture of chicken and prawn - every single one contained sweetcorn with no sign of prawn! (I can buy better from my local asian supermarket) now tell me is this typical of thailand?
It certainly has never been the case in other authenic thai restaurants we have been to. The second starter was newzealand lamb skewers with a peanut sauce and amazing garnish (the garnish was the best thing about them!), the lamb was dry and sauce generic.
The main courses arrived for us to find the egg fried rice bland, dry and chewy, the boiled rice much the same.
One of the main dishes was meant to consist of marinated chicken with a thai salad was again totally bland, and unappealing with annaeimic soggy chicken skin served with a cold salad consisting of whole penuts, carrots and beansprouts served in a red cabbage leaf.
The roast duck curry was more palatble but the duck was, thinly sliced , dry, and tough, with absolutely no flavour! The best thing was the red curry sauce, but again i can get find better at the asian supermarket from a jar.
We could not stand to see what might have presented itself for desert. To add insult to injury, when we got the bill there was 10% service charge added, (which you had to subtract from the end figure your self if you didnt want to pay it) with a bold sign on the bottom of the bill reading, "10% service charge is optional". When you hand your card over to the waitress , the only option you are given is to type in your pin number! Then the reciept (with the 10% added with no choice to opt out!) handed over with a smile and a thankyou.
