God Save The Queen
February 15, 2008
I'm giving this place the thumbs up for a number of reasons.
Firstly, not too many places (in my opinion) get the lighting right but the OQH has passed with flying colours. With an eclectic mix of designer light-shades and low watt globes, the average patron here appears to be much better looking than what you get at many places in Islington. That's enough for me.
Secondly, the ground floor is condensed yet surprisingly comfortable, creating a really vibrant atmosphere. It's not every day you see people in London rubbing shoulders with a smile on their face (aka The London Underground), but a mix of leather sofa's, tables & chairs, stools, subtle lighting, and good looking people fixes that.
Thirdly, the food was really good and reasonably priced too - £5 for entree, roughly £9-11 main. There's quite a good choice ranging from salt & pepper squid to dim sum to burgers to salads to the ever-so popular amongst the English.....chips!! I had the dim sum platter and have to say that it's as good as Ping Pong.
Finally, the service here is very good and the staff are always friendly. Waiting times at the bar is far less than at many other pubs across London, with the exception of the Charles Lamb of course. God I love those guys.
I haven't been to the OQH on a Saturday night, as I'm abstaining from queuing, but I'm told that the upstairs area turn into a "club"...and I use the word "club" very loosely as I'm sure Smooth Criminal is on the play list.
WiFi is availavle too.
