Amazing Sunday Roast
March 02, 2008
The Princess of Wales is a great little local in Primrose Hill. I met some friends here for a Sunday roast and was very pleased with everything, from the food to the ambiance. Although the place isn't terribly large (we had to angle for a table for a good 20 minutes before snagging one), it is very cozy and clearly a center for the neighbourhood.
The place is laid out like a donut, with the bar in the middle serving as the hole. Ringed around the bar are several tables as well as the passage (which can sometimes get rather tight), and then there are a few little areas that break out from the edges of the donut. With only around 12-15 tables, it's not a huge place but it is clearly a favourite of many as the place was positively crammed when we arrived in the early afternoon.
Given the crush, the food took a while to arrive, but it was definitely worth the wait. I had a sausage and mash dish which was generously doused in gravy. Two of my friends had the Sunday roast which they devoured, and the last went for a veggie option - a mushroom and stilton pie. Although the servers were clearly stressed out dealing with all of the people and orders, they were still friendly and gave us the attention we needed.
To top it all off, there was a jazz quartet playing some live tunes as we had our meal, which was a nice bonus. I have to say I wonder what the pub is like on a Wednesday or Thursday night, as it is in a rather residential area, but it is quite nice for a Sunday roast if you are in the area.
