Awesome Roof Garden -

4.0 out of 5.0

July 07, 2008

Is it sunny? Are you near Hoxton Square? If you answered yes to either of these then you need to get yourself up on the roof of the Red Lion. (actually I'd only go if you answered yes to the first one AND the second one - not just the second one)

The pub downstairs is small, cute and often full of 'odd' people - I can't describe it much more than that, just go and have a look. The roof garden however is much more varied and you tend to get 'all sorts' up there but to be honest once you've got a pint in your hand and the sun on your face who cares. The view is great and because of the height you get the sun way later than most other places in the area.

The only downside is that the roof garden is 4 flights up so its a bit of an arse having to go down and get the rounds

Small yet oddly appealing, this pub has long been the place that those 'in the know' would arrange to meet, away from the maddening hoxton crowds. Under previous landlords it was a bohemian hangout and had many regulars. Identity crisis and change of management has sucked much of the life out of the place, although it gets going at the weekends: DJ's still play down stairs, there is a good room upstairs for rent for private parties and Thai food on the middle floor. A bit soul less now but still a good place to escape the hoards.
