Cool Old Pub in Clerkenwell

4.0 out of 5.0

Sign says it’s been there since 1546 so that makes it, uh, older than just about anything/everything. It’s in a sort of secret location off Hatton Garden. Has a fine selection of ‘real’ ale.

Marvellous Mitre

This is one of the best pubs in London. It is found by walking down a small passage. Apparently, it is on property once owned by Lord Hatton. He and Queen Elizabeth I used to dance around a cherry tree together--or so goes the legend. The tree is still inside the pub, carefully preserved within a glass case. It marks the spot between two properties.

There are three small rooms in the pub and a tiny staircase to climb to get into one of them.

Staff are friendly.

Definitely worth a visit.

Very cool. Very full of history
