This pub is unwell
December 10, 2007
Probably the most famous pub in the area, synonymous with the heavy drinking soho 50's / 60's bohemian crowd championed by the journalist Jeffrey Bernard, many cartoons of his exploits can be seen in the bar. Well known for having the rudest landlord in London - Norman, now sadly retired but still to be seen at times. There is a huge painting of him hanging behind the bar. Worth a visit even now most of the old school have shuffled off to the saloon in the sky, current crowd reflects this - a mixture of semi old timers and younger media crowd hoping a bit of the old boho ways rub off. New management has so far kept the 60's decor and the pub is in limbo.
It's a national treasure and well worth a visit, but watch those prices - it's been well over £3 a pint for the last few years - look for specail offers on spirits and the wine is reasonable.
