I highly recommend Cornwall - beautiful beaches and foodie heaven! Personally I like to go in the warmer months (but try to go before/after the school holiday period to avoid the major crowds). But there's also a lot to be said for rugged coastal scenery and warm cosy country pubs during the autumn/winter. Padstow is of course infamous for Rick Stein's empire but there is a hive of activity on the food front if you do a bit of research. Cornish pasties, fish and chips and cornish ice cream are just some of the must dos. Also don't miss lovely St. Ives, Truro cathedral, the lost gardens of Heligan, the Eden Project, St. Michael's mount, Trelissick gardens, The Pandora Inn (Mylor)... gosh i could go on and on!! Stanstead - Newquay is around 45 minutes via plane.
