Where can I find good Italian sausage? I'm looking for the typical pork and fennel sausage, either hot or mild - I've looked all over and can't seem to find a decent one. Are there any classic Italian butchers or delis in London that I should know about?

I've never actually been, but friends have said Fratelli Camisa in Soho is one of the best - http://www.tipped.co.uk/listings/4474/Fratelli%20Camisa. If you do go would love to hear and will report back if I get there first, now that I'm thinking about it I really miss great Italian sausage.

I place I've eaten at many of times is called Canaletto on Beak Street in SOHO near the California Pure. They change their menu daily but serve up loads of hot Italian foods so could quite possibly have meatballs one day. Best to call.

Have you tried Rossodisera in Covent Garden? It's an Italian deli and I've walked by it but never been in. If they don't have meatballs, they will surely know where you can get them. There's also Lina Stores in SOHO on Brewer St but again, can't recall if they sell meatballs.

Sorry, meant sausages not meatballs but my answer doesn't change. In fact, pretty sure Canaletto's has sausages, although maybe not your specific flavour. Have you tried Borough Market?

And I just saw in my Tip Stream Alex T.'s review of Gazzano's was voted useful, had a read and it sounds like it might be pretty great.

At Borough Market all I could find was an Italian sausage by The Ginger Pig - it was a good sausage, but still tasted like British sausage to me. Too chunky, no real fennel. Whole Foods has one that is close, but waaaay too garlicky.

I'll check out these suggestions - thanks for the tips. I wonder if "Italian sausage" is actually "Italian-American sausage"...

Damn, apparently 'Italian Sausage' is just an American invention: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italian_sausage

Still, I want some.

That's really funny. I grew up on it myself because my uncle had an Italian restaurant, so totally relate to the craving. I guess it'll have to be Savaloys for a while longer.

Have you tried http://www.simplysausages.com/italianherb.htm ? They used to have a great little shop in Smithfields - sadly no longer :( but it looks like they do mail order these days...
