I kind of want to dye a couple pair of jeans myself. Does anyone know where I can buy clothing dye?

Almost every Woolies sells Dylon cold water dye. It's really easy to use.
Failing that, I think that Cass Art on Berwick Street sell them too.

how do you do it? I always hear people saying about pouring the dye in the washing machine - that always sounds dodgy to me!

There are specific dyes that you can use in a machine (you'll want to run another wash afterwards to make sure any residual dye washes away), but there are plenty that can be used in a bucket too.

It's been a while since I did any dying, but you basically (wearing rubber gloves) pour the dye into the water with some salt, mix it around, chuck the clothing in and make sure it's all evenly coated.

You then leave the dye to absorb for a while, stirring every now and then. After that's done, you take the clothing out and rise it with a dye 'fixer' to stop the colour running. It should then be okay to wash as normal.

The bucket will probably end up dyed too, so don't use anything expensive!

Thank you Pipis! Hopefully I'll get to it this weekend, sadly the Woolworths in my part of town closed, but I'll find one somewhere...or get myself to Soho.

I gave it a try and it might have worked ok, but turns out I bought the Dylon dye that requires boiling vs. the cold water type as Pipis said; and of course I didn't bother to boil the dye or follow any part of the directions so we'll see how they wear. My local DIY carried both types btw.
