Half Baked - I'm always tempted by the pretty pastries produced by Sweet, tempted enough to pop in to their shops (including the shop just opened on Whitecross Street) and at the market stands. Unfortunately, Sweet seems to only make pastries that are gorgeous but dull.

If dullness was their only crime, I would be happy to give them a higher rating, but on several occasions I have gotten items that were under-baked with raw centers. I like a gooey brownie and a moist macaroon, but I, like many others, am not a fan of playing Salmonella roulette. Consistency also appears to be a problem: one brownie was so undercooked it had to be eaten with a spoon (could have been awesome if it had been (a) intentional, and (b) didn't taste like raw eggs and flour), but on a recent visit the brownies were overcooked, dry crumbly, expensive, and in desperate need of a chocolate infusion.

With the high prices and the pretentiousness of Sweet, I expect a lot more from their products. I've been drawn in by the siren song of the pretty pastries only to be disappointed too many times now, but the charms have worn off. 17-08-08
