Hummus Bros London Reviews

Yummy Hummus - Pretty good Hummus. Awesome on pancakes.

Anyone for Hummus? - This was definitely a first for me: a restaurant based entirely around hummus. I keep trying to imagine the moment of inspiration where the founder said, "Wait, I've got it! A restaurant that only serves hummus! Brilliant!" I think beer, or something more notably hunger inducing, may have been involved. I can sympathize - there are moments in which hummus has been the single tastiest item on the planet to me too. Going with this basic formula, one might imagine other similar narrow-themed restaurants: the guacamole restaurant, the sour gummy worm restaurant, or the cinnamon toast restaurant. Perhaps hummus was more clever.

If you are going to base a restaurant entirely on hummus, you better have some damn fine hummus otherwise the whole premise fails. Hummus Bros. had only decent hummus, although it was mostly deconstructed: the lemon and garlic came on the side, tahini and oil sat in pools on top of the chickpea puree, salt was mostly lacking. The addition of chicken, guacamole, and a mildly spicy salsa helped matters immensely, and the Greek salad was also nice. All in all, I had a fun meal - I would be interested to see them branch out a touch more with some new toppings or spins on tabouleh etc. in the future.

That's all I can say right now, because I want to go work on my idea for a Marmite-only restaurant that is going to take the world by storm.

Just Hummous - This place is pretty satisfying, all things considered. It's a pretty bare bones operation - bowls of hummous complemented with various toppings, from veggies to grilled chicken and beef. Add a couple pieces of pita bread and you've got a reasonably healthy, cheap meal. The only real complaint I can come up with is that there is not too much variety on the menu, but then again they do deliver what they promise, so it's probably not worth complaining (they do serve several salads as well as smoothies). Also a bit peculiar is that the prices rise for dinner time (although I've seen this practice at other places in London, I'm not a fan of the practice and I'm not exactly sure how it is justified beyond a desire for higher profits at a time of the day when people are willing to spend more on a meal), and the service changes to one of table service, which makes one feel more obliged to leave a tip.
Still, satisfying hummous with yummy toppings and warm, fluffy pita bread. If only they served falafel, I'd be set!
