I Knit started life as a small group of friends who met one night at The Beehive pub in Vauxhall, London and who shared a common thread - knitting. Gerard wanted to meet other knitters who didn't mind dropping a few stitches over a pint or two, and who wanted to get out and knit instead of sitting in front of the TV at home. Since that first meeting the I Knit London group has met in over 50 different venues across the capital and continues to meet every week, attracting knitters of all ages and abilities for a social, creative, and sometimes drunken, experience. The knitting group is still the fundamental driving force behind everything we do.

I Knit London London Reviews

Knit, KNOT! - I was very excited when I read the previous review of the I Knit shop in Lambeth and made a point of going on the first possible evening for a knitting fest.

When I arrived, the place was packed with knitters and there wasn't an empty chair left to sit on!

No one spoke to me or made me feel welcome, so I inched my way around the shop looking at the wool. It was hard to get past the knitters whose chairs blocked the passageway.

As someone who is allergic to wool, I was not impressed with the selection of non-wool yarns. I could see only two kinds of hypo-allergenic wool: a four-ply cotton and some plastic stuff for "knitting" fun things for children.

The cotton came in lovely colours, but I couldn't figure out who worked in the shop to ask for help. I wanted to ask what one could knit with such fine cotton other than baby clothes. I wanted to ask if they had any patterns for it.

The plastic stuff looked like it would be a major hassle to knit, although I liked it in theory.

I then looked through some knitting patterns and found a couple of fingerless glove designs I liked. I stood with the patterns in my hand for a while waiting for someone to notice me and help, but no one ever spoke to me. Finally, I decided I could probably find some similar patterns on the Web for free.

By then I had started to sneeze and I wondered if they have a cat in the shop. Not only am I allergic to wool, but I am also allergic to cats.

I decided to leave.

I wandered down the street to catch a bus to Oxford Circus just for the sake of it, which was much more interesting than standing around like an imbecile at I Knit.

Neat Knits - This is a great gem along Lower Marsh. When I stepped in I was charmed by the homey atmosphere and the ready made pieces throughout the store. I could have been in there for hours...

Along the walls there is such a large selection of quality yarns and blends in little cubbyholes. They had plenty of alpaca and wool yarns to chose from in many different colors, weights, and varieties. There are plenty of different brands, and all within reasonable prices.

There was also a very large selection of knitting and crocheting books. The largest I had seen in one place. From Stitches and Bitches to Manly Knits. In the back corner of the store is all the haberdashery and needles!

They also offer knitting and crochet classes. People also meet here every Wed & Thurs at 6pm to knit and craft and just hang out--they have a little fridge of beer and wine in the back. How great, a knit shop with an alcohol license!
