Munal Tandoori London Reviews

Tasty Massive - Munal announces it's presence with a beautiful smoky aroma of spices wafting around the vicinity. Just walking past can get my tastebuds jumping.

A small, cheerful, bustling restaurant decorated in dark, carved wood and fresh white paint; there are just a handful of dodgy prints on the walls to remind you of the provenance of your meal.

Brisk but friendly staff are mostly pretty effiicient, though when it gets very busy (Friday and Saturday evening for example)and the takeaway and delivery service is in full flow; when the table of 16 are just deciding how many naan breads to have and Bill's auntie Maureen wants to know what's in the chicken bhutuwa things can take a little longer to arrive than one would have hoped...or even a lot longer, but as long as you're not rushng off to be knighted or to catch a plane or something, just relax and the food will come in due course.

And it'll be worth the wait!

Much of the menu is familiar territory, with chicken tikka, kormas, bhunas, bhiryanis and so on. You'll also find some proper Nepalese dishes, which are worth exploring.

Starters have the same mix of 'recognisable' dishes like samosa and onion bhaji along with Nepalese staples like momos.

I've eaten there many times, and taken huge amounts of their food home for consumption in front of a good - or even a rubbish - movie, that there might be a temptation for me to send you in the direction of my own favourite dishes, so I've canvassed a couple of other regulars in order to get a more rounded look at the best dishes to try.

Favourites amongst the small but perfectly formed group I asked included vegetable madras, chicken tikka masala, prawn dopiaza, the ubiquitous bhaji...in fact the only dish to get a thumbs down from those who had tried it was the Nepalese mixed tandoori, which shows up smothered in a bland and creamy sauce.

My own meal of choice (and when I get my spot on Desert Island Discs, my luxury will be Munal Tandoori, lock, stock and clay oven) starts with Momos, which are plump little dumplings filled with beautifully spiced and seasoned minced lamb, served with a totally brilliant tomato and chilli dip, followed by chicken bhutuwa with a couple of rotis.

I know this doesn't sound like much of a meal, but I ask you to believe me when I say that I (187cm, 105kg) have occasionally struggled to finish this. In fact, the portions are so enormous that my girl and I generally order one starter, one main, one rice and a couple of rotis between the two of us, and we can STILL struggle to finish!

So, to sum up: a pleasant, busy little Nepalese restaurant in the hinterland between Putney and Sheen, serving great food cooked with a deft touch (and on the Indian side of Nepalese cooking, rather than the Tibetan/Chinese side) and served in portions of heroic size for small amounts of your English pounds.

Highly recommended - and another recommendation: Don't forget to ask for your complimentary dinner guests!
